Unmasking Poetry

I cannot write a poem

Or so I’ve been told

I cannot date

I cannot work

Or play sports

What’s an autistic poet to do, not that I know,

I cannot do what I've been doing for years?

Who cares if I can or can’t write a poem?

Since when has our value been based on poetry?

I don’t play baseball; I dont want to

I can play baseball

I can date

I can work

When others choose see me as a person

I can write at least one poem

Though, why stop at one?

When in doubt write

Let your words out

Others don’t define me

Or decide  my capabilities

I don’t have a disease

I don’t need your pity or contempt

Just your humanity and empathy

While not writing this poem…

In these dark, deadly times

Maybe someday we can all see the humanity in each

Learn to treat others as equal

In the meantime

Write through our confusions

Our fears

Our doubts

Our love

Our empathy and humanity

Our unnamed

Our unknown emotions

Light the fire of peace

May love burn to the darkening night

Bring poetry to the world

One word at a time

Each a letter committed to justice and truth

For the sake of transparency, I have to admit that I’m writing this poem

I know it's just words…

Yet I had to be written

And brought to the world

In prayerful hope for a future written by love

My words are my power

May they bring light to the world
